In June 2023, the Monegasque Athletics Federation (FMA) took a new turn towards sustainability by following the recommendations of the Monegasque Mission for Energy Transition (MTE).
As part of its flagship events, the Herculis EBS Meeting, member of the Wanda Diamond League, the FMA conducted a thorough assessment of its carbon footprint during the 2023 edition, which took place last July 21st. With the support of the Monegasque company Gienov, the final report was established in March 2024.
This report highlights several crucial points that will guide the FMA's future actions. Among these, it emerges that 88.5% of emissions are attributable to the transportation of spectators and athletes, 9.4% to materials, and only 0.3% to waste. Regarding this last point, measures have already been implemented to reduce the use of single-use plastic, with nearly 27 kg of plastic avoided through the installation of water fountains for athletes.
This assessment marks the beginning of a series of initiatives by the FMA, which is now focusing on improving public transportation, among other things. Other steps are already underway, such as the pursuit of ISO 20121 certification. These initiatives fall within the general recommendations of the Wanda Diamond League, World Athletics, and European Athletics, which provide support and advice for these sustainability efforts.
The FMA and the Herculis EBS Meeting reiterate their commitment to sustainability while continuing to promote sporting excellence on the international stage.
